All the Hip without the Hop

03/31/2010

Instrumental hip-hop for some reason has never been officially recognized as a genre. Which probably comes as no surprise to those of you who’ve never heard of it. While traditional hip-hop typically focuses on rapping over repetitive beats, instrumental hip-hop allows the artist to explore musically. One of my favourite examples, and quite possibly the first of its kind is DJ Shadow’s almost entirely sampled Endtroducing….. Shadow uses his positively massive record collection (over 60,000 albums!) to craft some beautiful sounds. Listen to “Midnight in a Perfect World” and try not to agree with the title. For something more up tempo try “Organ Donor“. Oh and if you’ve got the epilepsy, do heed the warning at the start of the video.

P.S. I obviously don’t own the rights to this music blah, blah, blah…just enjoy the illegal goodness.
